Squats and leg lifts help to build the muscle groups you would use for a roundhouse kick . Practice kicking a heavy bag .(it will work your muscles and build your balance) You may also want to practice standing on one foot , with the opposite leg raised and your knee bent . This would of course be for balance .

Stretching. There are videos on youtube that explain how to do the split. They are done by gymnasts who do a really good job explaining the stretches. Just type in 'How to do the split'. Balance is important. Do your kicks slow motion while maintaining your balance. The slower the better. Do the kicks off your rear leg. It's harder because you need to rotate more. When your leg is fully extended hold it there for 5, 10, 15, 30 seconds or more if you can. You won't need ankle weights for that. Trust me your leg will get heavy enough if you hold it out there long enough. Keep control when you re-chamber and put your leg down slowly. Don't 'fall' into your stance. 10 to 20 reps of that on each side every day.

Roundhouse kicks. Try practicing them in slow motion. This helps develop your balance. Try some with your muscles contracted. This builds strength etc.

Practicing with a person in gear or a heavy bag is best. You want to get the feeling of throwing your entire weight into something. Start with the basics, balance and form. Then ramp up to targets, then people. Round house's should be quick and not telegraphed. They are one of the best kicks you can use. KEEP IT WAIST OR BELOW... that foo foo TKD bullshit above the neck crap will only work on retards.
