I work in an office for seven different people. Around Christmas, they each give me a Christmas card with either money or a gift card inside. I've worked here for a few years, so I know when they hand me a card that there is $$ inside. Do I open it in front of them, after they hand it to me, or just say "Thank you," and open it later (and of course send a thank you note either way.)

I would thank them at the time and open the card when they are gone. But sent the thank you card after Christmas.

Say thanks and open it later. The only time you open cards in front of someone is if they ask you to, or at a party in your honor (birthday, wedding shower, baby shower, graduation party, etc.) Open the grad party gifts, but leave the envelopes until later unless they ask.
