I'd say a higher percentage of atheist can read

I think that a lot of atheists choose that path after they read the bible, so yes, they would know the bible. Also I believe that a lot of atheists have read the bible because they want to find out what is so special about the book they always hear about. I think most religious people go to church and listen to what they are told. Some do read the bible cover to cover but I don't think that most do! Not in my experience anyway.

In my personal experience, most atheists have spent years within a religion and it is their extensive study of the Bible that leads them to atheism. Generally, they read the Bible first and then become an atheist. (NOT being an atheist and then reading the Bible to find reasons to refute it, as some have suggested.)

You may have a point here. I know many so-called Christians who are pitifully ignorant about the book they call sacred. I have studied many religions. I was sent to the church where Mom's father was pastor regularly when I was a boy. I soon saw errors in the Bible even at age 8 or 9.

It'd probably be close. Many people are raised as Christians from birth, and never feel they have to read the bible to be a Christian. As an atheist, however, the first thing any Christian says when they find out my beliefs is to tell me to read the bible.

I think that if this is true it would be to the undoing of the atheists. If a person has no clue of what is taught in the bible, God will only hold them accountable for their moral convictions. If on the other hand they are aware of what is being taught by the bible... and still choose to deny God...well... judgement day won't be such a good day for them. We should all pray for their souls to be enlightened.

Yes, unfortunately, it's like you said. I think it's because most Christians (I said MOST, not ALL) think they don't need to read the whole Bible because they're Christians anyway;)...So they just read the 'guidelines' they're told to read and learn, and leave the rest of the Book unread. Big mistake indeed;)

Most Atheists (like me) instead, not all of us though, love to go through the Bible as well as through all the ancient texts in order to learn as much as possible and to find reasonable answers and evidences; and that's why the percentage is just like you said;)

I would highly disagree with that assumption. Atheists think they know the Bible because they take sections out of context. Why don't you read and STUDY the Bible? I challenge you to do so.

I don't think so, we go to Church at least once a week and study the Bible. In my experience, most Atheists do a quick read, and then learn which passages to take out of context to "prove" their own beliefs.

Just my observation.

Peace!

I have read and have studied the bible for over 20 years.
I'm a christian who knows the bible, the new test more than the old. I just wonder if the 'christians' you speak of are what is called by Jesus, 'lukewarm'. And Jesus said he would spit them out.
Although, is it knowing the bible that allows one to be saved?
No. It's faith in Jesus the christ.

my opinion
