Before any treatment you have to solve your tmj problem. This might mean the use of a "bite" that allow a repositioning in a physiological way of the jaws. Well you have to know that there is a clinical position and a physiological one. The first is determined by the memory of the contacts among teeth. The second is the position when there is the minimal eletrical activity of the masticatory muscles. Using different tecniques is possible to known how much millimeter is the discrepancy between the 2 positions.
Only after that the dentist will decide which strategy is better (restorative "patching", protesic crowns, orthodontics) in realizing the risght occlusion (the clinical occlusion should be equal or very close to the physiological).
An important point is to understood the origin of the sound you ear. Usually clicks are caused by a menuscus not more in the right position. You could have also bones remodelling. The Nuclear Resonance is the gold standart for TMJ phathologies.

some amount of popping is there in everyone but should not worry if no pain is there. your jaw muscles might be sore so start to apply warm hot towel around the TMJ area near the ears, for 5 min at night before going to sleep. this helps to keep the muscles relaxed and you will find less popping. mouth opening always has a slight shift of lower jaw which is normal.

I had a similar problem (misaligned jaw, loud clicks, pain + couldn't open mouth wide) and was treated by a cranial osteopath who, for just over 100 quid, solved it. I now open my mouth, have no pain or clicks. You could try that instead of braces and splints....I sympathize
