Has any other theological idea empowered, on as grand a scale, it's followers to torment, torture and kill for the benefit of the victim's immortal soul?

If Jesus did any of the things in the New Testament, then they were caused by Satan to test the faith of the Jews and to test the Jews ability to hold to the prophecies of HaMosiach. Those who became Christians failed the test miserably and are the children of the Adversary for they follow a false fulfillment of the Covenant and have discarded the Eternal Covenant in favor of their 'new covenant'.

You are confusing God with human beings.
If Jesus tormented or tortured or killed anyone for the benefit of the victim's immortal soul, you would have a point...however, He was Himself tormented, tortured and killed for the benefit of our immortal souls.
Evil people have used Christianity to their own ends, and still do to this day...however, that doesn't make Christianity evil...rather, it makes those people evil.

A response to some other posters:
"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things." -God, The Bible

Anyhow, the concept is quite evil yes. The main reason being within the context of the mythology god could end all of that torment if he wanted to.

Plenty of believers claim otherwise, but within the material I've never seen a claim that it WASN'T evil. God says it clearly and plainly many times.

I think you will receive the obligatory "no" to this question.

If Jesus wants non-believers brought in front of him and slain, then the action changes in morality to "good" because whatever Jesus or God does is defined as good. See? A bit circular, you say? Well, we don't need rational thought to have faith!

How could salvation from this world possibly be evil? Like most people you view Christianity as a killing machine. Christianity never started any war----people start wars and people that start wars are seriously misguided as to what the gospel means. Presidents that start wars and insist on maintaining them are not Christians----I don't care what they claim to be.

the "gods" I believe in are NOT evil and dont have anything to do with torture and death. They believe in earth and air and fire and water, the 4 elements that sustain us

Christians do not torment, torture of kill. Jesus' salvation is not evil. It is what saves us from our sin and evil. Jesus chose to die so that we can live.
