I heard someone say that it's because of Immigrants that these E.Coli breakouts are occuring, i.e. NAFTA(that nice little agreement between the U.S. and Mexico as well as Canada). there was talk about how since the food is being packaged by illegal immigrants who don't know about Hiegene, that's the reason there are E.Coli breakouts, I'll admit that before NAFTA or illegal immigrants, there weren't that many incidents of this bacteria, but then again, I hardly paid attention to the news before NAFTA, I was in High School deal with Cafeteria food(uuuugh) which was bad enough for me. so what's your take on this?

E.Coli I heard was found in fecal matter of animals so......and this isnt' to talk bad about immigrants, but I heard this........OK, so I heard it in a show from this guy who calls himseld Savage, he tends to scream at just about everybody who calls in on his show as if he's close to cursing, but cuts himself short, personally I think he's gay, because he's a bit too angry to be a male.

My mom says it's because illegal immigrant poop in the fields but I personally think it's just as likely that they stepped in cow poop and walked in the fields or that the fields are simlply down hill from the cows and rain water washes their poo downhill. I suppose my mom could be right but it's just as likely that she's wrong. And there's always been ecoli and there's also always been immigrants- neither is new. (My mom got ecoli about 8 years ago from a fast food place where the employees weren't washing their hands) Ecoli comes from poo- Fecal oral transmission is what they like to call it. So if there's poo on veggies that don't get washed you get ecoli and if you don't wash your hands after wiping you get ecoli and if you toss the salad you get ecoli and the reason you get it from undercooked beef is that slaughterhouses aren't clean- you have all kind of bacteria all over and with steaks if you heat the outside enough you kill the bacteria because it's only on the outside but if you have ground beef you have now mixed the bacteria into the meat and it needs to be cooked all the way through. I know I went a little further into that than you really needed but I thought you might wanna know

Well. I live in New Jersey and there is a TB right down the street from my office. It was empty for 2 days and packed again yesterday. People don't give a damn.
I have been listening to this on the news every morning and again at night. Haven't heard the NAFTA agreement come up once.

E coli cannot come from an immigrant - it is in the soil so it is getting into the vegitables during the growing process. As you often do not cook the vegitables the bacteria is not being killed. The people packing it can not give the food E coli

that's a bogus argument. has nothing to do with "illegals" or with nafta. it is more likely a case of improper employee sanitation (washing hands after toilet use).
and, of course, a lot of it has to do with media sensationalism. at first it was the green onions, then testing proved that wasn't the case, but it had already made all the news. now, there is even some doubt that the common factor is/was taco bell.

Well, I am in Florida, and the fact is immigrants pick all of our crops (citrus, vegetables, sugar), and you can't piss on the food you eat. During harvest season you see port-a-johns all along the edge of the fields. If they get used often I don't know. Hard to say what happens south of the border!

Listen, E. Coli 0157 can be destroyed at temperatures above 70 degrees centigrade. Below this, it forms spores and can protect itself - surviving.
Even if the meat was riddled with E. Coli 0157, cooking it properly would make it safe to eat.

Read Fast Food Nation. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. And it has nothing to do with the nationality of the food preparation staff.

The theory behind the spinich E-coli outbreak is that it resulted from a pig, or wild boar, that deficated on the spinich.
Why would we not be correctly washing this stuff would be my question...
