One of my long time friends recently got married and went in to rehab for pill, pot and alcohol addiction -- this is after he started having seizures due to diet pills that he wouldn't tell his Doctors or anyone else he was taking.

He avoided me (I drink beer and would be a horrible influence on him) for almost a year and I assumed he made other friends in AA and rehab. No problem there.

A week ago I got an email inviting me to his birthday party that he is throwing for himself. He stated specifically "I will be opening presents, hint, hint." He has always been narcistic, but I thought it was pretty funny that he's almost 40, throwing a party for himself, and doesn't want anything to do with me unless I bring him a gift.

I didn't go, but my brother went to eat for free. A total of five people showed up (one being his wife and two others were his parents) for his "party" -- brunch and miniature golf.

He kept referring to my brother as "the resident alcoholic" whenever Champagne would be offered. Apparently, he is even more self centered, arrogant and condecending than he ever was.

Do you think that the years and years of drug and alcohol abuse have caused irreversible retardation to my friend's brain?

I think he could have suffered some brain damage somewhere in the mix. But it is also likely he could be jealous of those who can drink alcohol without fear of relapse(which could explain his comment about your brother and his avoidance of you). As for the self-centered behavior? There's no excuse for it, and you were right not to go to his "party". In all likelihood, he was self-centered even before the drinking and drugging days- and the intoxicants made matters worse.

I don't really know, if you will ever stop wanting it. Sorry but to be honest.. it's like anything that feels good, you will always want it, or desire it to some degree. But what I have learned is that there is a... detachment that causes us to really crave things, whether it be food, coffee, smoking, or other drugs. There all there to give us that stimulation and that feeling of being... more here. I don't really know how to explain it, or even if I understand it fully. I just saw something about it on Oprah. Sometimes what causes us to crave things is hormonal imbalances, or being down about something that happened.. any type of sadness or stress. Even stresses that come from things we aren't aware of. Like foods, or chemicals that our body's are sensitive to. Ecstasy takes a toll on your body, especially when you are that young. I would maybe go to a doctor that can test you for various hormone levels, including thyroid and adrenal hormones. Which many times can be greatly affected my amphetamine/ stimulant use. Try finding a holistic Doctor, or one that tests T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin, and dhea and very important: cortisol. I just don't think, if someone is totally their whole, healthy, selves, should really ever deeply crave something. Cuz there's a difference between wanting or desiring something, and really craving something like you need it. Most likely your body is telling you something. Well, that's my thoughts, though I've done various drugs, I can say that I never was addicted. But I do know what it's like to be addicted to other things.

You said yourself that "he's always been narcissistic" - there's probably a chance that drugs and alcohol have altered his personality, but having narcissistic tendencies is a gene thing. He would have to go thru therapy to overcome it.

Merry Christmas!

i don't know this person but it sounds to me like he has low self- confidence (he needs other people to bring presents so he feels better about himself) which probably started or enhanced the drug habit. now that he is sober, the drugs are gone but the low self-confidence is still there.

Maybe he was a bit retarded before but having drugs increased it.

if he is clean now, he probably just thinks he's better than everyone, drugs hardly would have caused that, its probably his personality and the drugs/booze was just toning it down sadly enough.
