Let me second the opinion of the Canon 30D. It is incredibly fast as far as being able to shoot 5 frames/sec almost indefinitely even in RAW. It has spot metering for light. It can also go up to ISO3200 (I don't recommend this since it is pretty noisy up there).

The difference between 10 MegaPixels and 8.2 is minor and you will not notice it at all (this is in answer to the 400XTi). The sensor size is the same, so you are just crowding more pixels in the same area. Not always a good idea.

The 30D feels like a professional camera. The 400XTi is still very much a pro-sumer. If you are interested in impressing clients, the 30D will.

What you are intending on photographing will determine your lens choice. I note you did not put that in. I have a 50mm f/1.4 for portraits and candle light, a 100-400mm IS L series for birds and distant shots, a 28-135mm IS walking around lens, and a 10-22mm wide angle.

Whatever you choose, Canon is aces.

Best of luck and stop by my site.

For specifically above 10MP camera from Canon you're looking at purchasing either the 5D (12MP) or the 1Ds Mark II (16MP), both of wich will run you from $2500 USD (5D) to $8000 USD (1D). Both of these are full frame camera's that deliver excellent results, and have a wide variety of lenses available from Canon.

If you're willing to choose compromise on the mega pixel size then either the 20D or the 30D (between $900-$1500 USD) are also excellent professional level DSLRs available from Canon.

In regards to choosing the best camera the best advice I can give you is to research, and if you have a camera shop available to you, also stop by and handle anyone of the above choices to see how comfortable you are with the handling of the camera. Also regarding purchasing a camera also consider that while you need a good camera that can do the job you want, the best thing to do is invest in a solid lens collection, because you will invariably be upgrading your camera bodies as time goes on, and can bring your lens system forward to your new body choices.

Personally I would buy either the 20D or the 30D as they are both great camera's and on a pro. Level, and purchase the best lens possible, and upgrade from there.

I am not sure exactly what prices would be in India, but you have ruled out the top professional cameras. The best "near-pro" Canon DSLR for you would be the D30, but by the time you add a lens and memory card, you will be about 80-85000 Rs.

You might be interested in the D400 (XTi) with a EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (28-135 equiv.) ($500)

Since you want to go in for a DSLR from CANON go for EOS 30D, though its a 8.3 Megapix, it is decent enough. I have handled it myself and the console button at the back are easy to use and understand as compared to NIkon...

Given me a choice, i would rather opt for Nikon D80, from grey market and save some money(as well as invest this saved $$ for accidents n repairs), canon's noise level is poorer when compared with Nikon D80.
