I've heard that anxiety goes hand in hand with depression... and I have both. Will an antidepressant help the anxiety too?

I'm not a Christian, and please don't preach your "gospel" to me.

Some of them do help with both things.
Wellbutrin is one that does not tend to help with anxiety...although an excellent antidepressant, it can worsen anxiety. ("Can" being the key word here...for me, I didn't have a problem with it.)

I think it is true depression and anxiety go hand in hand. I also think if you alleviate depressive symptoms, that in itself will often alleviate some of the anxiety symptoms.

Good heavens, these people are idiots. Some antidepressants are also approved to treat anxiety. Valium and Xanax are only used short term for acute anxiety issues. They are NOT chronic use antidepressants, I don't care what 1 person says or does. Doctors may prescribe Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil or others for anxiety as well as depression. Often, depression is the result of anxiety or is at lest linked to the anxiety. Prozac has a very good record and is safe for use in teenagers. Talk to your physician about any concerns, allergies, other medical conditions, etc and he can help pick out which is best fro you. But again, I feel any SSRI would be effective in your case. And unlike all the people who posted before me, I have many semesters of pharmacology and therapeutics to back up my suggestions.

As always for medicines, it depends on the specific medication and your body's tolerances.

I was on Zoloft for my depression at 100mg/day. My doctor moved me up to 150 mg/day, and I started freaking out badly due to anxiety. My current doctor said that most people can take 150mg easily and for me to have that kind of experience probably means the meds effect me more than the "normal" patient.

What you need to do (and I know you're probably tired of hearing this) is talk to your doctor/therapist/etc to see what they suggest.

Yes they do, but the doses are different. Doses for anxiety are much smaller than doses for antidepressants.

No antidpressants do not help with anxiety. To help with anxiety you need an anti-axiety med along with an antidepressant.
