what can you do for someone who tries to be at the center of attention at work?

Please provide a specific example of her (his?) actions. Why does it bother you if he/she is the center? Perhaps he/she deserves it? Is his/her behavior preventing you from doing your work? Is he/she doing something directly to you that impacts you, or does it just bother you that he/she is well liked? Without specifics about what he/she is doing, it's difficult to provide specific ideas for how to handle it.

Short answer without any details from you -- IGNORE HER. Then she wont be the center of YOUR attention. You cannot control other people's behavior. Only your own.

On one hand you can ignore them and hope that they go away. This works on some people but others are more likely to act even more crazy! What I would do is after they say something, be really short and say "uh-huh" and then keep talking like before. That way they know you are not really listening to them and will hopefully walk away to someone who is a "better listener".

I would try my best to ignore them, I am sure that others at work notice this too....encourage them to ignore the attention seeker as well. Just remember that attention seekers want any attention that they can get positive or negative.

It has to be the most annoying thing going!! I deliberately ignore them just because they want so much attention.

Call them out every time that they do it. Bring it to their attention in front of every one else.

Do what is necessary for them at work and in work, but otherwise leave them be.

Roll toilet paper over their cubicle, throw paper clips at them, trip them and blame the power cords.
