A rabies shot is not considered legal unless it is given by or under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Highly unlikely that you can even get ahold of canine rabies vaccine if you are not a vet. Usually it is 1ml under the skin, how often it is done varies by state law. Some states require that it is given once every year, usually this is the southern states because rabies is seen more often there. Some states you can give rabies once every 3 years for booster vaccines. Usually the first shot is given between 4 and 6 months of age.

Rabies vaccine is actually for sale to non-vets in SOME states. Not many anymore. There is a reason for that. Rabies is DEADLY and if the vaccine is NOT handled correctly, it is NOT effective and the animal vaccinated with it would not be protected. That is why vets must give it in most states. The first vaccine is can be given when the animal is three months. It is then boostered a year after, and then USUALLY THREE years after. You need to chack with YOUR state laws regarding rabies vaccination to make sure. Sometimes, it is done every two years, some every three after the first vaccine. Getting a CERTIFICATE is the other problem. Many vet, kennels, dog parks, and Health Departments WILL NOT accept proof of vaccination UNLESS it is given by a vet. So even if you CAN get the vaccine and give it, it may not be any good if you are required to have proof.
The dose for rabies vaccine is 1cc/ml, given subcutaneously or intramuscularly...for dogs and cats. It is also 1 cc/ml for ferrets, but 2 cc/ml for sheep, cattle, and horses.
There are usually many free or low cost clinics in most towns.
A rabies "tag" means ZIPPO!!! Many clinics do not give tags. They are NOT considered proof of vaccination since they can be MOVED FROM ONE DOG TO ANOTHER!!!!!!
This is direct off the BOX of Merials IMRAB 3......................
"Imrab 3 is recommended for the vaccination of healthy cats, dogs, sheep, cattle, horses, and ferrets 12 weeks of age and older for the prevention of disease due to rabies virus."
It CAN and IS given at three months. Some people wait and give it later so they do not give it with another vaccine, but that is a CHOICE! IT can be done at anytime from 12 weeks ON!!!!!!!!!
You DO NOT have to wait until 6 months!!!!

Must be done by a vet (around here anyway) Just took my little girl last Saturday and she is 13 wks old. Dog must get annual check ups but the rabies shots of today are good for 3 years. My vet likes to booster every other year though. I live in an area where rabies has recently increased.

Rabies vaccinations are given to puppies at about 16-18 weeks of age that will last for one year.
At their yearly checkup, they are given a rabies booster which will then be good for 3 years. They should be vaccinated every 2-1/2 to 3 years after that. Most municipalities require you to give them a rabies certificate when you register your dog.

Even if you're a breeder that self-vaccinates, the Rabies shot must be administered by a licensed Vet. You CANNOT give the dog a rabies shot yourself.

Rabies is given first during puppyhood (time varies by the manufacturer's recommendations). It is then boostered one year later. Depending on the state you live in, it is then followed up with yearly boosters, or 3-year boosters. It is given subcutaneously. Most states require that a licensed veterinarian give the rabies vaccine.

It is illegal to vaccinate you pets against rabies in most cities. Check with your local animal control agency. It must be given by a licensed vet due to the public health risk from rabies.
You can vaccinate your pet against parvo, distemper, kennel cough etc.
If you choose to vaccinate anyway. It is given at 6 months of age, under the skin. You can get a 1 yr or 2 yr vaccine.

Rabies is usually not given before the pup is 6 months old. A vet must administer this vaccine and can not be done by anyone else. It's a law since a tag must be issued.
