I have a few items in the Windows (XP) system tray that I want removed. There is no exit option in the item's right-click menu.
The "safely remove hardware" is one of them. Windows firewall is another.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You can go to c:\Documents and Settings\\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and remove any there. Some programs are in the registry. If you don't know what you are doing, don't mess with the registry, but if you must, google on 'removing programs from startup'. Lastly, running msconfig from the Run command will open up an app that will have a startup tab. You can disable programs here. That should help but BE CAREFUL!

Why would you want to remove the "Safely remove Hardware" from the system tray?

anyway, if you have any drive plugged into your PC through a USB port, then it should be displayed.

If you are annoyed by seeing it, you can only hide them (yes, you can't remove them!!!), by simply doing the following:

1) right-click your Windows Task Bar (the bar on the bottom of the screen, that contain the "Start" button) then select "Properties".

2) In the "Task Bar" pane, make sure that the last checkbox "Hide Inactive Icons" is checked, then click "Customize".

3) For each icon, that ever appeared in the system tray area, you can select one of three options: "Hide When Inactive" (The default option for every item, which allows windows to show or hide the icon), "Always Show" (If there's an icon you'd like to see always, I use this option with the Volume Control Icon, and the Network Icon!!!), and the "Always Hide" (This options hides the icon always, usw this for any icon that bother you!!!)

4) Click OK then OK.

If you need to see an icon that has been headen (either by you, or automatically by windows), click on the "show hidden icons" icon (the small arrow-to-left at the left edge of the system tray!!!!!.

Good Luck ;)

Those sound like the default options that come with the Windows OS. You may turn off your firewall, but it won't remove the icon, it will actually bug you more and let in possible security risks, lol.

As for the "safely remove hardware" feature, you would need to "Safely Remove Hardware" for it to go away. Very likely though, you are using an external hard drive or some other component connected to your computer. Although, you would need to stop using the component for a simple system tray icon to go away.

Best of luck to you!

P.S. c0mplicated_s0ul: It's not recommended to just direct someone into such a powerful feature such as MsConfig unless they really know what they're doing. Have a nice day. =)

Run the Task Manager(Alt+Ctrl+Del)

• Click the "Processes" tab.

• Click on the gray bar in the middle column that says User Name to sort by user name.

• Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.

• Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or other user names.

• Click on END PROCESS

• Repeat these steps until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.
