It depends on the airline's policy. Some airlines (notably Ryanair and EasyJet) insist on a government-issued photo ID for travel. Others (such as BA and bmi) need only something like a credit card.
In airports where domestic and international departing passengers mix, a digital photo is taken of you before security, and linked to a barcode attached to your boarding pass. When you board, your identity is confirmed against the photo. This is to avoid people in transit swapping boarding passes and gaining access to the country without passing through immigration.
So, check the airline's website before travelling.
(Note that this also applies to travel between the UK, Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man - these last 3 are not part of the UK, although all airlines insist on your carrying photo ID to Ireland.)

You need an ID. In the uk there are two forms of id recognised by airlines, passport and driving licence. I personally feel more secure showing my passport as my ID

actually no, you are not technically crossing an international border
You will need photo ID though, such as a UK driving Licence or an Identiity card from a European state. The ID must be issued by a government organisation such your local Gym card will not suffice.
