It depends on the airport and also if you are traveling internationally.
All airports with scheduled airline service have at least one security checkpoint you must go through. In some airports in Europe you go through two if going from there to the United States because they have a maximum security zone in addition to regular security.
And if you go from one country to another you will experience:
An immigration inspection station where passports and visas, if required, are checked, and then
Customs which is concerned with importing material goods into a country and sometimes taking material goods out of a country.
