Hi and welcome,
Here is what I would do:
Here are two links to free Antvirus software programs to download and install. Only intall one at any one time or they will fight each other. They are both great and used by Millions of people (me included).
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
Or you can always use this online Antivirus thats put out by Trend Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
This will take care of the virus issue.
Next is the spyware issue.
First thing I want you to do is reboot into Windows after you have done the above.
Now download the next two utilities and install them.
Reboot and while rebooting tap F8 and go into safe mode. Now run each program.

Now when this is all done reboot into Windows and I believe all will be good with the world.
If this helps please click Best Answer.
Thanks
Andy

There could be spyware or adware installed in your system. Download Spybot Search and Destroy (free software) or Adaware and run it. It will detect if there is some malware on your system. I use Spybot and it is pretty effective. Try some other AntiVirus software like McAfee or Symantec AntiVirus and run a thorough scan of your system. If you still see that your system is sluggish, try to clear up the c:\ by rightclicking on the C drive --> Properties --> Disk cleanup. If that still doesn;t improve the performance of the system, upgrade your RAM or iuse TuneXP or TweakUI to make all the drivers to be copied to the beginning of the disk so that the access time is less.

Hi, the reduced speed could be because of undetected trojan, which downloads more malwares on the computers. Not every antivirus detects every new threat. You should try to do scan online from any free online virus scan company of your choice.Symantec, Mcafee, etc all major antivirus companies provide free online scans. Even if they do not remove but only detect any trojan/virus. Note down the name, and then download manual removal instructions by searching with Google. Most of the Trojans need to be removed manually by editing registry, searching and deleting their specific files from hard disk etc.
You should have an Antivirus, an Antispyware, and enable Firewall on your computer. If any of the three is missing, it will expose your computer to online threats.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

Use antivirus KASPERSKY, and update its definition files. Go to www.kaspersky.com to download its evaluation version. And to speed up the computer, make a new user in WIndows XP control panel, or remove your profiles at MY COMPUTER->PROPERTIES->USERPROFILES
see USER PROFILES heading and click on Settings. Removing profiles removes all your desktop files and settings of outlook as well, remove favourites . So be careful. AND use softwares "TUNE UP UTILITES 2006" to boost PC performance

You did not mention, how much hard drive does your computer possess. Probably you have installed a lots of applications. It will be better if you uninstall some of the bigger applications which you don't need much. You can of course install and use any application, whichever and whenever you need, from the setup from any removable hard drives.

You need to run adaware and spybot, you most likely are infected with spyware (worse than a virus anymore). Or reformat your hard drive and start fresh.
