I'd say after looking at a few of them buy one of the two TOM TOM systems the more expensive option even has a built in MP3 player.

I've been looking too. TomTom is something I've used before and it seems to be the cheapest and most user friendly. As I wanted one for use abroad that doesn't take up much room I've more or less narrowed it down to a tomtom one with western european maps. If you're not going outside of the UK the UK and Ireland maps are cheaper. The old version of tomtom one is a slightly chubbier model so look out for version 2. Don't leave one in the motor. Or leave the suction mark on the screen for that matter, 'cos someone will relieve you of of it - and you'll have to get a new door or window too!

I find my Navmn 530i very easy to use and very accurate for getting from a to b. No other gimics on it. Its better than the system installed in my new Honda and better than the cheap tomtom. Ive never looked at the later tomtom.
