I was raised by my Grandma, who made her living as a dressmaker. She had all sorts of clients, including the other kids in my Home Ec class! I wasn't allowed to bring home my sewing work, in fear that she would be the one doing the work. And yet half the class cheated by having her do theirs.

Apart from that, I have very wonderful memories of the Home Ec classes I took in Public School. It was a requirement of 2 classes a week for both Grades 7 and 8. The best part was getting to EAT all the food we made. Which was a big deal when we were making roast beef dinners. None of the boys ever complained about cooking and sewing either.

Yes, I DO think that Home Ec should be taught in all schools. In public schools it should be a pre-requisite, so all students are exposed to SOME skills for taking care of themselves in future. In high school it can switch to an elective, so that girls and guys who are interested in pursuing this farther can take more intensive courses.

Yes, I am all for having home ec classes in public schools. In the society we live in today to many parents dont teach their kids even the basic stuff. And once they get out of the house they dont have a clue what is going on. It would be great if everyone knew how to cook a little and sew a button on. I think they could even include a little section in there on how to open and maintain a bank account. So many things that are basic to our way of life are not taught in school. They leave it up to the parents and well.....its not getting done. Home Ec is good and I loved it in school. And my teacher was so cool.

Cooking and sewing. Cooking was fun and no disasters that I can remember. Learned to make home made bread in class. Sewing was a different matter. There were only a few sewing machines. and you had to be fast to grab one. However I could not get the hang of sewing and used to sit out and pretend I was basting a dress or something, so I did not get much sewing machine time. I think I only made an apron. I tried a dress, but it was a mess and remember the Nun ripping out a lot of my stitches. Still am not much of a sewer (that does not look right) today.
