I have 5 children ranging in age from 28 to 7 and I've learned that its not what you spend at all but it truly is the amount of thought you put into choosing the gifts. One or two well thought out gifts are always better than tons of plastic and garbage that you have to clean up off the bedroom floor. The best Christmas my family has ever had was one year when we had very little money to spend and the kids all knew it, but we were aware of some people who had even less, so we shared what little we had with those who had less. The kids still remember that Christmas and still talk about it today.

only what you can afford to spend. christmas is about giving, yes, but whatever you can give is good enough. if you don't have enough money to buy, you can always make something very nice. if your kids are young, a good idea is sometimes to get a lot of small things so there is more under the tree and more to open. don't feel as if you have to compete with other families and other parents. your kids will eventually understand that you did the best you can. a gift that is from the heart will always do.

It depends on where you live and what kind of spare money you have. In some areas the kids will get huge amounts of money spent on them, while in others, due to economic problems, there is little or no money spent on the children.
Sometimes doing something as a family is far more important than the gift. Children will remember the things you did and not necesarily the things you bought for them.

I guess that is all dependent on your income, the number of children you have and their ages. I am a mom of three kids ages 3 thorugh 9 with an income of about $55,000. My husband and I agreed that about $200 each was feasible, considering they'll be getting spoiled by other relatives as well.

I spend roughly around $150 to $200 on both of my kids. That doesn't include stocking stuffers or the Santa presents. To me that's about normal. Also depends if they were normal kids or out of control kids that year.

Normal? Define normal? I mean there is no set standard and it depends on your finances and your personality and your beliefs and so many other things. May I suggest that you teach your children it is better to give than to receive and give them a modest gift and then take them somewhere and allow them to volunteer their time/money to someone in need during this holiday season. This is way more valuable than any material gift you can give them. They will never forget it. Happy Holidays to you.
