Married filing joint -$16,900 - $18,900 if you're both over 65. This is income in ADDITION to social security. If you just get ss and no other income, then you don't have to file.

If your only income is your Social Security you will not be required to file an income tax return. You would need to make a little over $17,000 above your SS before you would need to file. However you would want to file if you had withholding on those amounts beyond your SS.

The instructions for 2006 indicate that a married couple filing a joint return with both age 65 or more by 12/31/06, need to file a return if their gross income was $18,900 or more.

ALL people over the age of 18 need to file tax forms.
While it may NOT actually be a law, I recomend it to portect yourself.
There may also be some tax breaks available that would bring in a refund.
IF you DON'T file, it is easier for the IRS to "prove" evasion, and also you choose to not take any and all breaks.

Everyone that works has to file an income tax unless they are only on welfare or social security and that is their only income.
