Anti-islamic/muslim comments abound...anti-homosexuality comments ooze.....anti-athiest questions every 5 seconds....
I hate to say it, but everyone has a problem with something. You can't ban people's opinion. It's the freedom of speech, no matter how ignorant the person is or how hateful the words are.

Religious people want the world to be more religious. A lot of those people use aggression or even violence to promote their religion.
Many of non religious people (like me) think the world would be a better place without religion. We think that many religious beliefs are delusional and cause irrational behavior.
This is the cultural conflict between faith and reason, and has been ongoing for millenia now. The last time that faith won out completely we had the dark ages. I'm here because I don't want a modern dark age.
Religious folk often say "Hate the sin, love the sinner." I have to admit that I hate religion, but I try to use peaceful loving-kindness as much as possible towards religious people to help them out of their delusion.
Finally, you say "and why is Yahoo allowing this to happen?" Do you seriously think that restricting free speech would be beneficial?

To your first question:
Because there are many different beliefs, and varying degrees of knowledge of each belief among the followers. Theologians spend years studying the dogma and writings of their religion, and the followers come forward and claim to know it all when in fact they are misrepresenting their faith's teachings, and this causes heated debate.
And some people find certain religious preaching to come across as a better-than-thou father-knows-best type of thing, so they get angry since they feel that it's being forced upon them.
To your second question:
Yahoo seems to be promoting freedom of beliefs and ideas, and the expression of them. As long as it's not vulgar or overly-hostile, dissent can cultivate thought. If you start restricting this dissent past the vulgar and overly-hostile point, where do you stop? Freedom of speech is necessary for a site like this, even if some uninformed speech slips through the cracks.

I think it is because the religious people try to push their beliefs on non religious people, and the non religious people do the same to religious people. I tried to answer one question from a non Christian, and sadly the asker received a lot of negative answers.
As for why Yahoo is allowing it to happen, I'm not sure.

People have freedom of speech, so they can say whatever they please, so yahoo has to respect that....and honestly you'd WANT that because then you see the truth, you see what this world has to deal with, what people feel in their hearts and what knowledge is now in accordance to how they feel about religion.
Which is interesting, because everyone has a religion so to speak....even atheists....they have a belief that there's no god...then there's scientologists, wiccans, buddhits, zionists, the likes....even excusing the fact there's no god they're still religious because they believe in SOMETHING....be it natur's course, darwin's theory whatever. So you have a bunch of hypocrites hating on people who have a belief yet they're religious themselves...it just so happens not to include God.....ironic isn't it?

It also seems people want to turn it into a porn site also. There is nothing wrong with free speach and sometimes asking questions can prevent ignorance. I think it is a good way for people of different cultures to communicate. I would never usually come into contact with another religions, such as muslims or Sikhs because of where I live and it is a good channel for communication. Of course there are always dickheads who abuse the system but we are grown up enough to ingore them!

Simply put, people who believe in doctrines let books speak for them so they've got nothing of value to say - hence only hatred for rival religions. As such, the sheep that put faith into paper and ink and not their fellow man are hellbent on recruiting other people into their little club. If you agree, you too are just like them. If you disagree, you are a soulless godless heathen that needs to be saved. Now that these people know how to use the internet, they take over wherever they can. If nothing's being done about it, it's probably because the admins are the same way.

Because there are a lot of bigoted, sad people out there who need help. We need more hatered like we need a hole in our heads. Let's just keep on praying for them and demonstrate love and tollerence. And hit the abuse button when we come across it. Perhaps if enough of us do that, Yahoo! will sit up and pay attention.

Primarily I would suppose it is because of two types of trolls. Those who come on and ask inflamatory questions about a religion inviting angry responses, most of these are anti muslim or anti-christian, and those who come on to use it, not to ask questions, but as a soap box to try to convince others to their way of thought.
The former are simply rude attention seekers who probably would not have the courage to ask such questions in a public place. The latter are those who try to push their religion on others. Both invite rude responses which are probably worse and more saracastic than they would get if they made their positions known in more polite manners.

People can not close their eyes to what is happening around the world.
Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebonan, Sudan etc. etc. are on 'fire'.
Who or what religious groups are involved all over these places?
Yahoo!Answers is just reflecting this.

Because religion is a hot topic. (some) People have no respect for other's feelings and will bash another's religion at will. Yahoo is allowing it because of free speech. It seems like more and more intolarance of religion is being posted on here these days.
