Fear of rejection which could have stemmed from being picked on or teased. Insecurities within yourself - comparing yourself to others and feeling you won't match up. Unfamiliar situations and people - you're not sure how you will react or how people will react to you. You don't want to get hurt so shyness becomes a defense mechanism.

Speaking as a shy person, I believe shyness has more to do with environment, what that person's parents and siblings are like, than anything else. That might make a person anxious around people because they feel they will be judged or made fun of. I think anyone can have low self-esteem, not just shy people.

People can be shy for many different reasons, low self esteem, fear of failure, beliefs of inadequacy - I suppose you could say that people would blame many negative traits to shyness.
I would argue however that many shy people have hidden depths that a seemley confdent out going person may lack - i have entered into many conversations with 'the life of the party' only for them to die a pretty boring death. Speaking to someone who is not so forthcoming however you can reveal a whole hoste of hidden depths that keep allure and interest. I have also met many seemingly confident people who after getting to know them actually have a very low self esteem, but build up a persona or barrier so no one will see their vulnerability.
Its not that simple - although I am aware that being shy may lead disadvantages in some situations e.g Job interview and delivering presentations. I guess its all about learning to respond to defering situations for individual and social benefit whilst remaing true to yourself.... this can be learnt.
What makes people shy.... I dont know, but if we were all loud ballsy people who held nothing back, we would all be pretty bored pretty quickly!

I think that among the reasons for which people are or become shy these are the most frequent causes:
- fear to fail
- low self esteem
- uncertainty caused by little knowledge about certain facts and events
- personality, shaped by certain exterior factors like family life and environment

I'm not a behaviour expert but i'd say it's largely to do with genetics. Some of us are programmed that way. If you are naturally shy you have to work twice as hard to overcome it but i believe it is possible.

It is a combination of genetics and environment. Unless something really traumatic happened, or something happened over a period of time to cause low self-esteem, it is probably mostly genetic. If it's something you feel uncomfortable about, you can do things to overcome it, but it's nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. In most cases it is due to your genes.
