I know those kind of things always seem lame. But in my own life I have found when I expected to have a bad time, I actually had an awesome time! Does that hold true to you also? Well either way, if u think about it, during your typical work day, there's not much to talk about except idle things, but if u miss the party and something funny or hilarious happens, you won't be in on the joke! Maybe u can go and be the funny dude! Make memories man, it's what life is all about. That AND love. Merry Christmas:o] \

You can always have an exit strategy if need be. Another party, christmas shopping, watch the kids, help someone out, my favorite~ have a friend call u an hour into the party & check your stats to see if it's time to bail.:o]

Sometimes in life we have to do things we do not want to do. Life is not easy and fun 24/7. It is a social obligation to attend an office Christmas party unless you are not a Christian or you really do have a real family emergency. Attend the party dressed appropriately. Eat a few nibbles and have one drink only. Sip slowly on the drink and carry it with you as you make the rounds of the party so that several people see you or say hello to you. Make sure you talk to the host and give a compliment or two. After this is all done, you have fulfilled your social obligation and you are now free to leave.

It's the same old thing every year!!! and you always end up getting too drunk and having a nasty hang over. I would say put in an appearance. You can always catch up with people that you don't get a chance to chat to at work. And you never know, it may be a good do after all. If it turns out to be crap then just make your excuses (babysitter) and leave. Have a lovely christmas and happy new year.!

The fact is, you can't enjoy the party if you don't want to. If what you want to know is "How can I get out of going to this party", that is different.

If it an after-hours party you can tell people "I would love to come, but I already have plans for that evening". You are not required to answer followup questions about your plans.

If it is during work time, see if you can get someone to call/page you and slip back to your desk to answer the call. Later you can apologize and say "It took longer than I expected", but you are then are expected to answer questions after.

Look at the office christmas party as a chance of promotion. Its important to show up, you'll be surprised you might just have fun. Dont stay too late, leave after the first person leaves

If office politics mean that not attending will disavantage you in the future then why not take on a role? Pretend it's your party and serve drinks, organise games or spend the evening folding fancy napkins or origami. I find if I have something to do then time passes quicker. Magic tricks are irritating but I took along a 20Q game to a dreaded party recently and spent ages with people who were trying to beat it (one did with 'flag').

I would tell people in advance that you can't stay for the whole thing because you have another 'do' to go to. Set yourself a time to leave. And then make the most of it while you are there.

Challenge yourself to say something friendly to everyone there, or to learn/notice something new about each of your colleagues.

You never know, you might enjoy it more than you think.

Go for a short time. Make sure the boss sees you and you thank the boss for the party. Then leave early before things get out of control.

If its a sit down meal kind of party, have the food, two drinks then say sorry but another do to go to. If its just drinks, have two drinks then repeat the do thing. You'll have shown willing by being there then gone with dignity. If anyone asks where the do is say friend, siste etc. Just remember which one you said!

Go to the office party. It is part of paying the dues. There may be networking going on there that you won't want to miss out on.
