What can I do about it....?

A fisherman gave me them.
I've been told to immerse them in boiling water for 20 minutes but I feel this might hurt.

I'm from a small fishing community in Nova Scotia. Depending on the time of year, you should cook them differently as the shell may be thicker, however a no fail recipe no matter what time of the year is to steam them. Try this:

Place a half-inch of sea water or salted water in a large pot, allowing three quarts of pot space for a lobster of one and a half to two pounds Place a rack in the bottom of the pot, or better yet, make an eight to ten inch bed of rockweed. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Using tongs, add each lobster to the steaming pot, and cover. A one-pound lobster takes 10 minutes; two pounds, 18 minutes; three pounds, 25 minutes; 5 pounds 40 minutes.

Best to dip them in freshly melted butter, and add some garlic if you so desire. As someone else pointed out, lobsters do not scream. The squeal you heard is air escaping the shells. One other tip, leave the elastic bands on the claws!

Happy eating!

Invertebrates and crustaceans don't have the same sensitivity to pain as humans do (anyone who claims they do is anthropomorphising them).

However, that's not to say that they don't feel pain at all, so the recommended way to cook them is to deep freeze them first. This lets them slip into a gentle coma; then throw them straight into the boiling water - much kinder, as they'll never know a thing about it.

p.s. any 'screaming' you hear, will be the squeak of air being forced from the shell as it expands in the boiling water...

Can I come over? If you put the lobster in the boiling water HEAD first, it is a fact, it takes less than a second for the lobster to die. I am with you on inflicting pain on the poor things, silly isn't it? But they are so YUMMY...with plenty of melted butter.

Are you talking about lobsters as in the edible ones or lobsters as in large crabs?! If the latter, I'd say go to chemist. Emersing them in boiling water would scald you abit an put you out of action for a while.

Supposedly they feel no pain if you plunge them headfirst into boiling water. They will be done in about 12 or so minutes too after they have turned a bright red.

boil water...in a large pot with a lid.

place the lobsters in the water, and put the lid on (you dont want to hear them scream)

in 20-25 min.. take them out and eat with some drawn butter. If you need someone to help you eat breakfast let me know.
