There are 2 point of views:

Quality: I would prefer Winrar, since rar is a better compression than zip (in my experience). Also... Winrar supports a lot of formats (including zip, rar, etc.). However, someone with only winzip won't be able to open rar files (except if it's archived as an exe file)

Ease of Use: most people are used to zip and not with rar. Winzip is also more used than Winrar (everybody talks about zipping files, not rarring files ;) ). But since we are talking about exe (which I wouldn't use, since some applications block this e.g. Outlook), it doesn't make any difference in terms of ease of use (exe is self extracting).

Suggestion: try 7-Zip. It's free, it supports rar, zip and a lot of other formats. You can find it on http://www.7-zip.org. I have been using it for a long time and it covers all my needs.

From my observation, WinRar compresses files into smaller size than WinZip. I think WinRar would be a better choice. I'm not biased though. I use both. WinZip for Zip files, WinRar for Rar files.

I am not sure about .exe files but winrar is better than winzip because of its compression.

I use AlZip, it supports MANY different compressed file types (including zip and rar)...plus, it's completely FREE!

I hope you are not going to compress a single file of 300GB, no compression technique would work there! I would advise you to compress files using PK-ZIP, a shareware, which you can script so that you need not manually compress so much data. Even Winzip can be used if you purchase a full version of it. Thanks!
