More length in a compact way of storing the length.
The spiral wire for a phone can be replaced with one of any length. The handset to baseset wire has nothing to do with signal modes, filtering, or induction. You could replace it with a straight wire, if you like. The problem you will find is that a wire as long as your spiral one will sprawl all over your floor...see the need for the spiral.

As far back as I can remember the telephone cable has always been spiral. It is something to do with the signal modes. I asked my friend the same question (he works for BT) and that is what he told me.

Do they really still make wired phones? I guess they do for businesses. It is so when you put the phone back on its cradle, there isn't 75 feet of licorice string that you have to deal with.

The first answer is correct, but I also think it gives you something to play with when you're bored. :)
