Because the original windows looked like a window pane.

I dont agree with the above reply. before windows, graphical user interfaces were pretty much in use on Mac, IBM (hercules card with paintbrush rem? :) ), Solaris, SVG, etc etc.
Windows was only used because thats the best they could come up with :P. The first Windows was build on DoS and ran like an application thereby providing a functional not-so-powerful Window into your non graphical DOS.

Windows 3.1 was very much like our windows now, you booted up and it opened a different window for every category of programs.

It provides the user a window to the world of Bill Gates, personally I use Linux it's safer, no antivirus or spyware programs are required, it's better at memeory management, and it comes complete with an office package that doesn't cost you hundreds of dollars. Come to think of it, Linux is free.....my favorite part!!!!!

Before windows people were not able to see different programs or folders or files or etc at same time.But with windows this made possible as we can see different sides of our room from different windows.
Windows also allows us to see different things using different windows.That is why Windows.

because Microsoft has given the name Windows to its Operating System, Unix will remain unix and linux will remain linux.
