The Peregrine Falcon is not only the fastest bird in flight - it's also the fastest animal on the planet!
The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) reaches the amazing speeds during its "stoop", or its dive from a high spot to descend in a plummet onto its prey. Since it is aiming at a bird which is also in the air, it has plenty of time to then slow and redirect its flight before crashing into the ground.
Depending on which source you read, the birds can reach speeds from 150 miles/hour up to 180 miles/hour at top speed.

The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird when it's DIVING down. It's not the fastest when flying, though. The fastest bird in flight is the White-throated Needle-tailed Swift, reaching speeds of 106 MPH (which is only 11 MPH less than the Peregrine Falcon's diving speed -- insane).
