Ultimately, it depends on how they are made and with what ingredients.
In all technicalities, donuts can be healthier because they are often between 200 and 400 calories. It's a lot, but your average bagel is between 250 and 400 calories, and that's before they're toasted and slathered in butter (as well as jam or peanut butter, etc., which adds up the calories pretty quick).
But yes, donuts are basically fried batter and sugar. So while they may be less calories than bagels, they have more fat and more *empty* calories. A toasted bagel with margarine may have higher caloric content, but will leave you feeling fuller for much longer than a donut will.
And the fat content of donuts leaves a lot to be desired. The average bagel has about 3g fat, while a donut typically has almost 20g fat.
So, essentially, it really depends, because not all bagels and donuts are made the same and it depends how you eat them, too. If you put butter on your bagel, add about 100 calories and 10g fat. If you also add jam, add about 60 - 80 calories. If you eat it with, say, peanut butter, on top of the margarine, then double the calories of the butter (since butter and peanut butter are about the same calorie- and fat-wise).
Okay. A bagel on its own compared to a donut on its own... The bagel is better. They keep you feeling full and aren't full of, well, crap. Donuts are fatty rings of fried batter and sugar.

Honestly, doughnuts healthier than bagels is hard to swallow. Bagels are just bread, doughnuts are pastry, much richer (egg, milk, lotsa surgar, especially those that are not plain).
She may be right, but I'd like to know what makes her say that.

I say bagels fo sho! But only if you have cream cheese. The great thing about bagels is that they can be sweet or savory and doughnuts are always sweet. Yes I know you can make them savory but does anyone???

Bagels aren't health food: too much carbohydrate! Do-nuts are not healthy, either. In fact, with all that sugar they have even more carbs. Just always eat a lot of protein with them to even it out! (My favorite? Poppy seed bagels & cream cheese, plain sinkers for do-nuts)

doughnuts are fried, and are much sweeter so have more empty calories, bagels are 'healthier' but are not healthy, refined flour etc
