People frown on online relationships and we tend to focus on all the horror stories rather than the successes. I am married to someone I met online (albeit I wasn't looking for a relationship) and we've been together for over 5 years. It can work. The problem is, honesty isn't high on the priority list with online relationships because people tend to hide their less admirable qualities. The anonimity allows people to be who they want to be or who they think they should be. Successful relationships rely on honesty and people presenting themselves as they really are. It is rare for people to do this online, but that said, often the 'lies' are not really that important and you can get beyond that. I am a success story and I know that not everyone ends up in my situation, but there are still some honest people out there and there are 'lies' that can be overlooked and overcome.

I quit looking for a relationship online after a string of disappointments -- liars, cheaters, people who misrepresented themselves in every way, including whether they were smokers and what city they lived in. The Internet gives people an anonymity that seems to encourage pathological lying.

Consider your "nickname" on this site and my use of my own name.

I'm in a relationship now with a man I was friends with for many years and came to love and appreciate in a deep way, based on full disclosure and an acceptance of the ways we are different.

I think one does, and if you are a very honest person, I guess sometimes, we think, we expect everyone to be like us, and be honest and truthful, but that is not always the case, because some people believe their own lies. And their are some people who are honest out their, and then their are the ones that you have to be cautious about, Have a great holiday!
