You've had 3 good suggestions;
If you're running 7.5 then check by manually updating; if it says its up to date then that could be the reason.
Check its allowed to access the web through your firewall.
And check the settings to see that it is set to automatically update itself in case thats been switched off. I used to get the e-mail scanner switch itself off for no apparent reason!
If all else fails then Avast is as effective, but slower to scan;
- Avast Antivirus
If none of that works then just download 7.5 again, uninstall and re-install.
Its still free, its v7 that won't be supported any more - why should they have to write 2 sets of updates and give them away free?!

There are many ways to update your AVG Free Edition, e.g:
right-click on the AVG Free Edition icon in your system tray and choose the Check for Updates option.
run your AVG Free Edition by double-clicking the AVG Free Edition icon on your desktop and press the Check for Updates button.
note: It is possible to update your AVG Free Edition also using the F9 shortcut from any AVG Free Edition application (AVG Test Center or AVG Control Center).

Hi, go to the AVG website and download the 7.5 version YMGEEK gave details. I did this last week after being totally fed up getting the popups about how it would need renewed in January. I didn't need to uninstall the older version as it automatically upgraded to the newer version once it downloaded.

AVG has said that it wil always remain free to home users, just as long as you have downloaded the free version rather than the evaluation version. If Version 7 was woking fine for a few weeks and has just suddnely stopped it couls also indicate that your firewall settings may be blocking downloads. Have you received and Microsoft updates recently or changed you own firewall settings?

Check you firewall isnt blocking it.
If it isn't then download AVG latest install version again > uninstall version on your machine > reinstall new version
Update: Also i like Wikipeida's suggestion, 2 posts below mine, about installing Avast AntiVirus. I might do this myself.. there is a free home edition.

Go to the AVG Test Centre in your AGV File, then go to Options and schedule the downloads. You have probably switched them off. Oh btw the AVG Stops in January 2007.

Good day. Check your firewall settings. U may have blocked AVG Update from accessing the net by mistake. This may also be the cause, read below, Laterz.

That is because there is at most one update so far, and you might have it!?
But, as a technologist who tests out the 821 Operating Systems,
I recommend you try using one of the 811 FREE OSES that are virus proof, pop-up free!
Microsoft runs all 45,000 systems for Hotmail.com, MS.com, MSN.com on GNU/Linux. http://pclinuxos.com
