This is the situation. I became minister of music at my church in September of 2005 after the previous minister of music retired. The choir was not receptive to me being there, even though I've been playing there since 2001. They were just so used to the previous minister of music. Anyway, in the year and 4 months that I've had the job, the choir is gotten bad. It's not so much about me, but there are people on the choir who need to be put off the choirs because of their smart comments to each other that hurt peoples' feelings. They try telling me what the notes are in choir rehearsal and they're wrong. They don't respect me or the choir president. The worst part about it is the pastor of the church keeps saying that we should just ignore the people. There are a lot of bad feelings in the choir, and my strongest members are ready to quit. I just don't feel like God is in this choir, and I don't know what to do. I don't get any respect from the choir or help from the pastor.

First thing is always pray. Have a meeting with the choir and tell them how you feel about what is going on. Don't forget to ask God to give you the words in which to say to them and let him do the talking and you be the mouth piece. What did Jesus tell the disciples when they go to someones house and they receive not the truth. He said knock the dust from your feet and walk away. If the choir will not hear the truth and start acting like mature people and do whats right for God's glory then knock the dust from your feet and walk away. God will take care of them.

The first thing that you need to do is pray, then plan a gospel work shop with a reputable minister of music that is not of your church. This will give them an idea of what a choir is suppose to be about. Plus because people are visual beings, if the see that the visiting minister of music is giving you respect, they will in turn reflect that behavior. The most important thing to remember is to constantly pray for the choir, separate the group that is letting satan use them. Start a worship and praise group with the ones that are really serious about praising the lord. Are you feeling what i am trying to convey to you. God Bless and my prayers are with you.

You guys need unity and lots of prayer. Also I think you need to speak up and talk about unity and being a church and choir that glorifies God - not themselves. Sometimes churches can act this way and it may be discouraging. Pray that God would lead you in the right direction - He may also have other plans for you - another church maybe - not sure. God knows and has the answer. But I think being silent is not the answer - you need to speak up and say a few things to the choir - hopefully you will be God lead. I will be praying for you.

The first thing I would do is have a choir meeting without singing and give them the choice. "We are suppose to be worshiping God when we sing because God Gave Us the Talent and that is what we need to use them for. If they are not gonna use their talents to worship God then they don't need to be in the choir" If they are still not receptive then take the group of choir members who do want to worship the lord and start doing solos, duets and specials - My prayers are with you and God Bless

You need to have a meeting, use much prayer. They need to be made aware you ARE the chior director. You have the authority in this matter. If they cannot live with that, they need to consider stepping away.

Also, another thought is a 'Chior Retreat' where you all go somewhere and learn to work together.
check out www.windermereusa.org and look at 'The Edge' They have a wonderful thing called 'the Lows' that teach teamwork in a Godly way.
I am sure there is something similar near you.

I would gather them up and tell them:Look, we are all here to worship the Lord with our voices, if you are here for another reason then move along. I am assuming these are adults you are working with? If so, they need to stop acting like Jr. high kids and get it together. I would be straight up with them.

You need a group meeting. Divide them in to small groups (drawn at random). get them to brainstorm what is good / what is not.

Summarise the key points, ask the group for an action plan.
