Sunni Muslims try to live life as the prophet (pbuh) lived, and uphold the Sunnah- (hadiths)
For the Sunni there were only 4 caliphs (the four great caliphs directly after Mohammed's (pbuh) passing.
Shi ite are a sect which believes Ali should have held a much higher role in Islam, and Ali is revered in the highest regard.
For me, I see no differance, they are Muslims who share the same Quran as me, and who uphold the five pillars of Islam, and who pilgrimage, and who live a modest life.
Even though I disagree with them on the issue of caliphs, I dont let that get in the way of my loving them as my Muslim brothers and sisters.
Peace :)

Shia;
It is often said that the Shi'a worship or deify Imam Ali, and that the Shi'a do not recognize Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman as the first three caliphs (Ali was recognized as the fourth caliph 656 AD). Early on, the Shi'a were referred to as Shi'at Ali, or The Party of Ali, but they are known as the Ghulat and have no association with The Shi'a.
Sunni;
Hold this against the Shia, even though the Shia never fully believed in these things as a concentrated group. Most Sunni accept the hadith collections of Bukhari and Muslim as the most authentic (sahih, or correct), and grant a lesser status to the collections of other recorders. These two books (Bukhari and Muslim) are strict in their accuracy and therefore are recognized by all Sunni Muslims.

When Mohammed (pbhu) died, a group appointed Abu Bakir as a successor/nation leader. Another group objected saying: "the Prophet said Ali must be the successor". On that unfortunate day, Muslims became two sects. The ones backing Abu Bakir are Sunnis and those backing Ali are Shia's. Ali later went along with this appointment, he did not want Muslims to fight over this matter, he can't have one Muslim killed for such reason. This was the root: Shia believe that Ali should have been the successor, Sunnis do not.
Some say: Shi'as worship Ali. This is a horrendous accusation. There are some simple minds who regard Ali so much, may be they over do it, but it wont come to worship.
In general, Shi'as recognize decedents of Ali (grandsons of Mohammed) but Sunnis do not.

shias have self belief that the subsequent chief after Mohammad ought to were Ali (the cousins of the prophet) it is written even in sunni books that the prophet customary Ali because the subsequent chief. the authentic message of Islam became held by using the prophet and the finest follower became Ali. yet then for his or her very own egocentric motives any persons, abu bakr, omar, and uthman, took administration and diverted and changed the message of Islam. they made their very own intense concepts and own innovations of doing issues different than how the prophet did. the fellow who followed what the prophet did precisely and had the right message of Islam became Ali. Ali gave this message and surpassed it right down to his kin - the prophets kin - commonplace as ahlul bayt. the twelve imams consisting of ali were all done by using sunnis. so we Shias keep on with Mohammad, Ali, and the 12 imams (which includs ali). using the indisputable fact that they had the authentic message of Islam. no longer the incorrect one
