Three students share a flat. Their tv breaks down and, not having much money, they decide to try the second hand shops. Eventually they find one with a tv for sale for £30, so, after parting with £10 each, they head off home with their purchase.
Just after they left the shop the manager arrives and seeing the tv has been sold asks his assistant what the students had paid for it. On finding that it had been sold for £30 he reminds the assistant that it had atually been marked down to £25 and, being of an honest nature, instructs his assistant to run after them and give them £5 back. The assistant however was not as honest as the manger, and decides to give them £1 back each and pocket the other £2.
By doing this it meant that the students had paid £9 each, totaling £27. The assistant had kept £2 making grand total of £29. Where did the other £1 go?

It’s a very old one!!! I refrain from answering. Yet, I want to know this: If the question is in Pounds and all you guys give an answer in Dollars, should I assume that Great Britain is not a US protectorate any more? Has already become the 51st State? Has the GBP/USD conversion rate been fixed? Questions, questions, questions...

Very old that one, it's just a way of changing it around to look like the total you gave. Actually, the true and correct answer is, each student had $1 each ($3 total), the assistant had $2 and the shop got $25, that totals $30, the original amount the 3 students had.

umm....i don't think the $1 went anywhere
see, the t.v cost $25.
so if u subtract $5 from $30 (let's take the dollars/pounds seperately, as numbers) u get 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
Thats 5 different numbers.
And, the numbers 1 - 25 had been paid.
so 26, 27 and 28 were with the students, and 29 and 30 with the assistant.
the one didn't go anywhere, but yeah, when u calculate it mathematically it does seem to add up to 29.
it's confusing - but math can play tricks on u!!!

$ 1 didn't go anywhere. Its just wrong way of calculating.
Cost of TV 3 guys paid = $30
Manager gave to return to guys = $5
Assistant paid back to guys = $3
Assitant Kept in his pocket = $2
(Cost of TV - Discount by Manager) + Money returned by Assistant + Money kept by assistant = 30
so it should be (30 -5) + 3 +2 = 30
RATHER THAN
(share of each guy in original cost of TV - share of each guy inmoney returned by assistant) x 3no. of guys + money kept by assistant <> cost of TV

actually instead of multiplying the $9 you add $3 for how much the students paid, then add another $2 for the dishonest guy
