If the number of platelets is below normal (thrombocytopenia ), this may be associated with:
* cancer chemotherapy
* disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
* hemolytic anemia
* hypersplenism
* idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
* leukemia
* prosthetic heart valve
* massive blood transfusion

I have low platelet count and really don't know why it happened but I have been living with it for over 10 yrs. I do know that I have a form of leukemia but the doctors don't want to do nothing yet because I have been fine living with the low platelet. I also have ITP.
