The seventh commandment, "You shall not steal” teaches us that we should respect other people’s possessions; and not to take other peoples belongings without their consent. Why is this an important message for today's world? and Why is this message a challenge to today's culture and values?

The commandments do not [teach] us anything, but are guidelines for living. Otherwise, the original translation is more akin to, "do not kidnap". Theft is not a capital offense, like the other commandments are, but a conventional crime. Kidnapping, however - stealing a girl from her family or another man's goats for example - was a capital crime and punishable by the lord.

There's a huge "DUUUUUHHHH" factor in this question.

Would you want anyone to take your stuff? Material possessions and belongings that you have purchased with your hard-earned money?

We need the law for conviction. This way we know what God expects of us.
