3 different young cats, just a few months old, have died in the same apartment. 1 has lived. The 3 different ones were not there at the same time, after first died, they got 2nd, then 3rd after 2nd died. At any given time, there were only 2 cats living in the home. The symptoms weren't really exactly alike for all 3 cats, but just that all got sick....first one's head kept swelling, was treated for allergies, then just died. Second one had blood clot on eye, was treated first for some kind of platelet disorder, then vet decided she had consumed rat poison before she was adopted and treated for that, she did get better to an extent, then died. 3rd hit her head on wall while playing with other housecat, acted like she felt bad first day, then got better for a few days, then just died. My daughter, who's the cat owner, and it is her apartment, seems to have an awful lot of headaches and nausea....I'm afraid there is some kind of connection. Any help out there?

If your daughter is having unhealthy symptoms too I would call in the board of health to have the place checked out. Possible small carbon monoxide leak, lead, mold??

the first cat may have had a disease that has remained in the carpet bedding etc. that the cats are getting this last one my have a better immune system then the others but be careful can be a carrier. clean the carpets and furniture just like you would if you knew it could hurt a baby because that's what a kitten is.
we got a kitten from a shelter and it infected all our cats even after it was gone for a lone time until we discovered one of the surverys was a carrier. I have a cat that lives on the road with me and every time he went home he got sick with a cold for about a year until we got rid of the last cat we had when they were all sick. we cleaned all the carpets and furniture have 2 new cats and when we go home my travel kitty come back just fine.

If it's affecting your daughter too, then there's a definite possibility of environmental contamination, she should have the apartment inspected or move. As to the cats, some viruses can survive in the environment for six months or more, FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) is one of these. The symptoms of FIP vary, but the tendency is to have a perfectly healthy cat that suddenly gets sick and dies in a matter of a few weeks. FIP does not affect people or dogs, only cats. Definitely no more cats in that apartment for AT LEAST 6 months. If she moves, getting a cat in the new place should be OK, but clean all her personal items first.

Necropsy (animal autopsy) could have been done on the animals to figure out why they died.

If your daughter is having headaches or nausea in the apartment, I could definitely have it checked for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning material containing carbon. CO poisoning can cause brain damage and, in severe cases, death. You can't see it, smell it, or taste it, but carbon monoxide can kill you

Here are some of those symptoms:

Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Flulike symptoms, fatigue
Shortness of breath on exertion
Impaired judgment
Chest pain
Confusion
Depression

Hallucinations

Agitation

Vomiting

Abdominal pain

Drowsiness

Visual changes

Fainting

Seizure

Memory and walking problems

I would take this as something very serious and get it checked out immediately.

Good luck.

Ebg_baf,
It sounds like your cats are killing and eating contaminated mice. Your daughter is picking up the contamination, probably from coming in contact with it through touch. It sounds like she needs to get the apartment fumigated.

Iv heard of cats dieing when the family was useing fabreeze on the furniture. Just because an ad says that it will eliminate pet odors doesnt mean it is safe for the pet. They are selling their product,,not in the bussiness of pet health care.

I suspect there is some kind of virus still operative in that apartment probably from a previous tenant's pet (who died).

What kind of heat does this apt. have? If it's gas a check for carbon monoxide just might be in order.
