First of all: All tattoo pigments hurt just the same. None is more painful than another.
Second: Some people think the outline is the most painful, in fact most people I have talk to say that. I found the shading to be more uncomfortable.
Third: It feels NOTHING like poking yourself with a needle over and over. When you get tattoo'ed you don't feel the individual pricks, the needle moves very fast.
Fourth: Where you get a tattoo makes a difference in how much it hurts. I'm sure you've heard plenty about that already. But, the sensation is not so painful that you should plan your tattoo around where you think it might hurt the least.
Lastly, the worst part about a (first) tattoo is the anxiety. Naturally, you have no idea what really to expect except for some sort of pain. Prepare for the worst and you'll be relieved when it finally happens. Nothing hurts as bad as you think it will.
For the person that said getting their tattoo covered up hurt worse, this is because when you get a tattoo, a thin layer of scar tissue builds up under your skin. I had one of my tattoo's touched up a while ago, and it hurt worse than getting it done the first time. The artist goes just a touch deeper to set the ink in the scar tissue. An up side to this is that it holds the ink extremely well, which means it will look good if the artist is good.
Also, some people may tell you that you can get all sorts of nasty dieseases from tattoos, this is true ... if you're getting ink under some bridge by a guy who carries his gun around in a back pack. Most shops are ABSOLUTELY "anal" about cleanliness. After all, they like repeat customers.

It depends on where you get your tatoo. The closer to the bone the more the pain. Usually in a muscular area it won't hurt so much. Stay clear of elbows, inside part of arm, inner thigh area, breast. To help dull the pain a little take 3 Advil/Motrin/Aleeve 1 hour before you sit down. It helps.
Just remember "One's too many, two's not enough".

I went with my boyfriend the other week when he got his 3rd tattoo done. There was a sign there that said, "What does getting a tattoo feel like?" and below it said this, "You didn't know what the first time would feel like, but you did it anyway. Afterwards you just looked for bigger and better things."
It's true, I have 5. All felt different when getting them done. It's not painful, just (depending on where on your body it is) annoying. The most comparable is to a sunburn or repetitive scratching. Not bad at all.... in fact they're addictive.

Really it does depend on the part of the body. Anything where there is thinner skin, like over a boney part, like your ankle, wrist, sternum, will be worse. Don't think you can help it by being wasted before you go, it doesn't help. I got mine on my shoulder, right above the place where the edge of the scapula is and it really never hurt that much. My artist talked to me the whole time and that probably helps. Take someone with you to hold your hand and talk to you. That's what I did the first time.

Having worked in 2 tattoo shops and having quite a few done, I can honestly tell you that it involves your pain tolerance, your artists style (how high do they run their machines? how heavy are their hands??), AND the location.
More sensitive areas of the body are naturally more painful to have tattooed. The insides of you arms, many spots on your feet, directly over spots like ankle bone, the chest, and head are often considered uhhh unpleasant.
The outside of the arms, most of the legs, etc are much easier.
I found the worst pain for me on my foot, achilles tendon (just don't.) and over my shin bones.
It's kind of like scratching a sunburn. It's not so bad once you stop thinking about it.

Depends on where you get it and wheter or not the needle has any burs on it, my frind got one on his calf and said it felt like a hot razor...who knows... my other friend got one on the back of his neck and had the guy stop half way through cause the pain was to much to bear(kinda a wimp that 1) i think its mor un comforting than pain, it felt to me like a needle was being stabbed into mea at a very fast rate... it wont hurt after a while

Feels just like a bee sting over and over and over again. Just real annoying. No the color does not hurt the worse. Its the start of the outline. They have to really grind the outline in because its the most important part of the tattoo.

It all depends on where you get it and what you get. The more detail and color the tattoo has the more pain. I have a butterfly and it hurt because of all of the colors and it was a cover up. but the words I have didn't hurt all that bad.

Thinking of getting one? Virgin to the gun. It honestly is more nerves than pain. Getting a tattoo doesn't really hurt, for me, I find it a time for reflection. Mind over matter. Zone out the BUZZ the gun makes and relax, go to your ? "spec ail place" and soon you've got that symbol of art that inspired you there. Good luck!!
You can do it!!

The pain depends on each person's threshold for pain. As for the pain, it is like a lady scratching your hand with long fingernails.
