I have a dear friend who has "smelled" dead loved ones often. She doesn't understand it, but she accepts it. She kind of wonders sometimes if there is supposed to be some kind of sign involved, but none that she knows of.
My opinion: We have 5 senses, some of us have one or more of those being extremely more sensitive than normal. I think this points to the image of God, who probably has a billion senses and they are very, very powerful.

Every body gives off a certain odor. In fact when someone dies their spouse will still smell them there at the house. Your father recognizes what his father smelled like and he had a safe and comfortable meeting because of it.

Smell is very closely linked to memory, even a tiny hint of a smell can bring things flooding back.

Just like we have visual memory, we have odor memory, too. It may be undermined as human beings got to rely on their other senses. Sometimes things trigger my memories and I remember smells from my childhood.

smells are the easiest and most common way for spirit to let us know they are there
it is also the hardest thing to disprove scientifically
a smell carries molecules that simply cant come and go as fast as they seem to do with spirit
i know people who have studied this in depth and smells seem to be one of the best pieces of proof of something " paranormal " going on
so yes i believe this may just indeed be his dad , come to say ... i am here son xx

My understanding is that many people who find religion do so because of an
"experience".
It wouldn't hurt however for him to be checked for a brain tumor.
Not all people who have and are caught up in weired experiences are psychological fruitcakes. Some are physically ill.

Yes - I have known a few people that have had that sensation - I have too.. When you are in deep thought - about someone you miss & love - your mind can start to remember them vividly.. it is purely psychological - but - he is not going mad .
