We have just been accustomed now to make sure no items are left on the floor, We have a one year dog who eats material items, literally. He eats pieces of towels..that we use to dry him up when it is wet outside, he eats the baby's slippers if they drop on the floor, he eats washcloths..we found out the hard way as we were cleaning up his pooh from the backyard shortly after getting him (As we got him at 11months old) we discovered some of our household items in the feces. Any advice or sugggestions about this..any other dog owner experience the same thing. He is a Golden Retriever, I dont know if this has to do with their breed or not.

The scientific name is pica, and it's VERY common in labs and goldens. He is still in the puppy stage, and may grow out of this habit. But some do not. Keeping things out of his reach is the BEST thing you can do to keep him safe, and I would reccomend that you only give him dog toys to chew on, giving him used human items to chew on may lead to confusion for him about what is his and what is yours. Educate yourself about the signs of a bowel obstruction as this behavior puts him at risk for that. Sudden onset of vomiting everything back up including water, sore belly or hunched back, and no stool for over 48 hours are some things to watch out for. Good luck : )

Your dog wants to chew. He obviously likes it. So make sure you give him goodstuff to chew. I'm guessing he looks around, and picks up what's on the floor. So if you put dog chew stuff on the floor, he wont be chewing your stuff. You can help make stuff more attractive to him by playing with it with him, or by putting a few drops of chicken bouillon on it. It can get expensive to buy doggie stuff from the store--but you can find old stuff that will do fine instead and wont cost you very much. Think yard sales and
thrift stores and check with your vet about what stuff might be OK--like old leather belts or leather shoes, which you can pick up for cheap. A few play sessions with you and the belt, a few drops of buillion, and the next time he wants to chew on something, that belt will look mighty good. You dont want to fight this need of his...you are lucky he hasn't decided to chew your couch, which I've heard of from owners. Just acknowledge he wants and needs to chew, and find appropriate things for him to chew.

This is very common for retrievers to do. Plenty of sturdy hard to eat toys would be a recommendation. He is still going through the puppy stage and it will take him alot longer to get out of this stage. They love to chew;.

Hey! my dog does the same!! He tears things up. This is because they are still growing up and their teeth are also growing. Like in human babies, even their teeth itch and therefore they chew anything they get. It is natural. There's nothing to worry about it. Give him a fake bone to chew on!! IT WORKS!!

it's pretty normal for dogs. they just have to learn--by your reinforcement--what they are allowed to eat and what they aren't. our dog eats anything as well, and yes, that includes towels, clothes, etc. it's also perfectly normal to find things like that in their feces. except for keeping them away from things that are valuable to you--don't sweat it; give them something they CAN chew on, an old towel you don't care about anymore or something.

They usually grow out of it. Mine finally did. My daughter was scooping the yard and was very offended to find a pair of her panties in a pile. I do still have a female that gets her panties but doesn't eat them just tears them up.

How about feeding him dog food and giving him dog toys. He's prolly chewing up your stuff because you don't have any dog chew toys for him!
