This is where we get French Toast from. Pain Perdu (lost bread) is made from the dried out bread from the day or two prior before adequate methods of storing it came about.

Soak your bread in a mixture of beaten eggs and milk for a moment (not until they are soggy) then fry in a bit of hot oil. Serve buttered with jam or hot syrup dusted with powdered sugar.

It is even better if you use day old French bread that has been sliced 2-inches thick. You can lay the slices in a cake pan and pour the batter over them, let soak, turn them over and then fry. Be careful when you put them into the hot oil as they splatter for a moment. They are perfect when they become crusty on the edges. Bon Appetitte

Bread and Butter Pudding

12 pieces of medium sliced bread
vegan margarine
sultanas
1pint runny custard

The amount that you use will depend on the amount of people you are catering for. For 4 people use 12 pieces of medium sliced bread and 1 pint custard.

Make the custrad with soya milk and sugar/sweetener according to the instructions on the packet but make it slightly runnier by using a little less custard powder (If the recipe calls for 2 tablespoons use one and 3/4).

Grease the inside of a large oven proof dish. Butter the bread with the vegan margarine and slice in half. ut a layer of bread (butter side up) on the edges and the botom of the dish. Sprinkle sultanas on it. Then put a layer of custard. Then put anther layer of bread covered with sultananas and custard. keep layering up until you have used all of the bread and finish with custard. Cook in a 180 degree oven for 30 minutes until golden brown.

Lots of cultures, especially mediterranean, have recipes for using up old bread. Try frying rough breadcrumbs in olive oil with garlic and chilli and tossing through cooked spaghetti. There is gaspacho soup, where tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumber, garlic and dried bread are soaked together then blended.
Also panzanella is Italian bread salad, chunks of toasted bread are mixed with tomatoes, lots of olive oil, garlic, red onion, black olives and herbs and left to soak so all the flavours mingle, this salad is good with a chargrilled tuna steak.

If I somewhat have any left over bread I make hand-crafted breadcrumbs. Take the bread out of its wrapper and let air dry till its thoroughly dry. in case you go away it wrapped up or no longer thoroughly dried out it truly is going to turn moldy. positioned the slices right into a nutrients processor and whirl it up till each and each and every of the slices were processed. positioned right into a plastic bag or field. it truly is going to very last for years. in case you want a finer crumb so positioned the bread crumbs through a strainer rubbing the crumbs with your fingers and purely throw away the large products. keep in mind that what you've is unseasoned. in case you want it like that it truly is positive to apply. in case you want to jazz it up somewhat separate the quantity you want to apply and upload: garlic powder onion powder, paprika ital. seasonings salt & pepper or the different seasoning that you want. The extra the merrier. once you're making those bread crumbs you'll in no way use the canned ones lower back. and also you do not throw out any extra stale bread. This works with any stale bread merchandise. Bagels rolls, warm canine buns and so on.
