There are several products out there that will really help you a lot.
St Ives apricot body scrub is great for elbows and knees, to really maximize your results, use a loufa sponge. (1.99 walmart) just give your knees a good scrub.
When you are done scrubbing the area, its important to apply a heavy body lotion/ body butter try Palmer's brand of.shea butters they work great. Aveeno offers a great line of body lotions, and calming creams.
Making a paste out of aveeno (or any brand) of oatmeal bath mix, is a great masque that will help calm and even out the skin around your knees. Just put 1prt water with 2prts oatmeal bath, pile it on like a masque and let is set 15 mins.
Dry body oil sprays can be a big help as well, you can spray those on before you leave the house in the morning and your dry skin will stay dewy all day.

You need to be a little more specific about what kind of uneven skin tone you have. Freckles, large spots like vitiligo, or large areas like some are more tanned than others? Your age would be helpful information because 1) uneven skin tones can occur with pregnancy-Chloasma, 2) uneven skin tones can occur while taking oral contraceptives, and 3) can occur while taking hormone replacement during menopause-Melasma.
You asked for at home remedies, so I assume a visit to a dermatologist or the expensive fotofacials and prescriptions are out of the question. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. The buffpuffs at the grocery store for a couple dollars will take off the same outer layer of dead skin cells as the hundred dollar microdermabrasion treatments. There are some good at home microdermabrasion kits available too. Many at home face mask treatments are as good as the ones at the spas. I like the revlon seaweed and mud paraffin facial that I picked up cheap on ebay.
To prevent recurrence of uneven skin tones, use sunscreen because tanning causes most of it. Also use a topical vitamin C serum every morning. It needs to be a high concentration, at least 10%. Everybody sells it: Arbonne, Avon, etc. Use some form of Vitamin A on your face at night. Anything that says retinol or something similar. UV rays deactivate vit A, that is why those type of products say to use at bedtime.

Homemade skin whitening products are by far the cheapest and safest solution to the brown spots which trouble you so much. Read here https://tinyurl.im/aHLUU
They are very effective and at the same nurture the skin, so that you will not only have a whiter skin, but a healthier one too.
Each and every person wants a clean and radiant skin. Some spend fortunes on cosmetic products that will lighten the skin and remove all the imperfections, others spend their money on esthetic operations in the hope that their skin will look perfect. Lastly, there are people trying to fake a healthy skin by using all kinds of makeup that will cover the imperfections and leave the impression that the skin is healthy and has no scars, wrinkles or spots.
All these people are looking for a way through which they can make their skin look good. Yet, what they have not taken into consideration is the power of natural ingredients. Fruits, vegetables and products coming from animals are great sources of anti-oxidants and are rich in substances which can whiten the skin, moisturize it, attenuate the fine lines and wrinkles and give it elasticity.

You should read Laura Jefferson’s book "Skin Whitening At Home" ( I saw it's also available in electronic format +video: http://www.skinwhiteningathome.com ). After 8 weeks I managed to get my skin a few tones whiter and I also got rid of freckles.
The method she teaches in her book is natural, inexpensive, and is readily available in most homes. You could even find some ingredients in your own backyard. The most wonderful thing about the method she shares in her book is that it will help you whiten or lighten your skin pigmentations, freckles, age spots, acne marks, dark underarms, melasma, or your overall skin color easily and naturally without breaking your bank or producing dangerous side effects. Good Luck!

Is it caused by sunburn?
I had that happened once after visiting Bali, for a few months my skin had different tones here and there. Regular treatment of milk bath and milk lotion helped by a fraction. It mostly just goes away by time. =]
There are more finer body masker you can use, i heard could help better.
