Because the whole world already have a stereotypical idea of Muslim people that they are very obscurantist, radical and reactionary. That is true. And we all knew this since the day one.
While we also know that not all Muslims are like that. Islam basically is not radical and reactionary religion at all.
THE DOERS of Islam mostly are very obscurantist and radical. They always feel righteous and they always think that Islam is the best religion in this world by denying and defying what is real or what isn't real in this life. They are not able to differentiate what is right and what is wrong in this life at all. To them their religion is already holy enough and righteous one. Muslims tend to believe that anything in this world except Islam are deadly and totally wrong. You will become the righteous one once you are a Muslim - in sort of speak.They really cannot accept or take any developmental positive critiques at all and always assume that they are the righteous one already and the whole world are dead wrong. I'm not standing to defend Islam or Muslims or Christian or whatsoever at all here.
Why the world see Muslims bad like that?
Because the whole world view Muslim people from the common preconceived notions that : MOST OF ALL TERRORISMS happened in this world derived from Muslim countries AND by Muslim people.
That is why that thing happened to your friend. Because almost every modern airports in this modern world have that kind of 'invisible' rule to rip off everything related to Muslim things no matter how holy and nice the Muslim people are in their life, STILL the authority will never take any risks from all Muslim people. We all know this....

Well, maybe your friends and you need to see what the Muslims are doing all over the World.
Violent Rallies with people screaming "Death to the infidels" "your 9/11 will come soon" "Kill those who insult Islam" and so on. This is in London and NYC, recently.
Suicide bombers blowing themselves and others up everywhere.
Muslims raping white women and girls in many counties and their Imams claiming that it's the womens fault because they dress in a manner that arouses the sex starved perverts.
Muslims killing those of their kind who want to convert and opt out of Islam and the Shari'at and Bukhari claiming it's right because it's as good as "Treason" to their Cause.
Look at the material at the links below and it'll give you an idea as to why everyone is acting like that with the Muslims, nowadays.
Incidentally, Sunflower is right. It's profiling. An American Muslim will not have any problem, because they don't fit the profile.

It's called racial profiling and it does happen. I don't feel it's so much
racist, as the simple fact Middle Eatern people are attacking our countries, so
that makes people of Middle Eastern descent suspect.
I hear a lot from blacks how they are treated in this stereotypical way.
I'm white, and have been mistreated as well, because of long hair. Once, I went into a store with a long coat, and security followed me around.
I've wore a ball cap and flannel shirt for 35 years. Today, it's a gang style,
and even when I go in churches people follow me around like I'm trying to
steal. Unfortunately, we just have to deal with this type of ignorance!

I'm sorry for your friend, but that's what happens when some of the religious and political leaders of his people organize, and/or support things like....flying planes into skyscrapers full of innocent people. My husband was pulled over because he has long hair and picked up a friend to take to work

The Muslims need to speak out about the difference between violent Muslims and non-violent Muslims. If all Muslims don't want to be treated as the worst among them, the non-violent ones need to speak up and say they are against Al-Queda and against those that wish harm upon Christians and the USA. Until we know and hear from the non-violent Muslims, they'll have to put up with the possible removal of their balls.

i think it depends on where the muslim is from as well.because im muslim but i am a white/balck muslim so i dont get checked in airports neither does my father,mother and brother does(we don't fit the profile).so i think it depends also on what race you are

Ppl were just doing their thing and die for it!
I had NO PROB with Muslims before 9-11, now I can't stand them because of what happened!
