First I have to ask if you're still in love with him? I will assume you're not since that makes sense on your question.
With that in mind I have to say the use of "but" in your question makes your question a double negative - AND to me that means don't spend any money on the boy who lives miles away.... hopefully he is the one who travels to see you.....
OK, now with a budget in mind - I think the standard male expectation should be you'll spend about 30 bucks on him...
1. if you want to string him along a little longer, buy a really nice silver frame - 5 by 7 (8by10 little over the top) and of course place in the frame a very nice photo of you..... maybe the two of you if you really want him to hold out hope for whatever the reconcile word is.....
2. its over.... sweater
3. he deserves a really nice present - you dumped him (sounds like it since you're really struggling with what to get him - if smitten you'd be asking to help pick which one...!) well, since he does live miles away (assume over 6 hour drive one-way) and I kinda got this new thing brewing - sweater....
I think you'll go with the sweater.....
