second and third degree burns are not superficial b/c they have broken the first layer of skin.

3rd degree burns usually require a skin graft. second degree burns-it depends on where they are located and how bad they really are-most can be treated with antibiotics and special burn cream (silvadene)

if you think you have burns this severe-you need to report to the er at once

How can a third degree burn be 'superficial'?

Third degree means the skin is destroyed right down to the area that normally regenerates the skin. In other words, it wont heal on its own unless its a small area.

The best person to ask is the doctor treating you. Hope you are not in too much pain. (but with 3rd degree there might not be any)

Yes, depending on how much area was burnt. Usually for third degree burns they do skin grafts, because the skin won't grow back.
