I've never been to New York City, but I've read a little about the subway system because I like trains. From what I've read, the current system is horrendously inadequate but the only talk of upgrading is the 2nd Ave line. I welcome any comments about the size, capacity, utilization, and so on about the subway system.

Anecdotally speaking, I've used it and found it to be efficient and entirely adequate. A little crowded around rush hour, but I'd rather bump into another person than bump my car into another person's car :)

The New York City Transit alone carried/transported 1.78 Billion People this year and made Trains Magazine's Number 1 spot for Top Ten People Movers. The NYC Transit has 26 subway lines and even though, they may be somewhat outdated, you're guaranteed to get to your location.

The NYC Transit has
-244 Route Miles
-6,492 Railcars
-72 Locomotives

If you think the system is inadequate just look at the billion people they have transported and maybe they'll give you an answer. I don't think the system is inadequate, it just needs a makeover.

The subway system in New York is comprehensive (it covers most of the city), fast, convenient, safe and economical. A single ride costs $2.25, but it is more economical and convenient to purchase a "Metrocard" that gives you a discount; the amount of the discount depends on how many rides you purchase at a time. For a first timer, the subway is intimidating. Maps are free (ask the attendant at any station), and there are maps posted on every platform. If you make a mistake, the worst case is that you will go somewhere other than where you wanted to go, and in that case, you simply get off at the next station, and then double back.

I take the subway every day to and from school, and let me tell you it works! It's not the cleanest place in the world, but it gets me to school on time, every day, and has been doing this since I started using it. The only problem I've ever had with the subway was when there was the transit strike, and that was a good thing (NO SCHOOL! w00t). Anyway, it's cheap, fast, and good enough for me.

It may not be the cleanest of all, but it is most certainly adequate.
