My dog is very hyperactive. We live in an open field-like area, and my dad hasn't put a fence around yet. The other dogs we have seem to be friends with the people around, and they go out of the property only to chase other dogs away. We're thinking about waiting until the fence is ready or making a smaller fence around her doghouse, but I just can't stand to see her all tied up like that. What can I do to make sure she doesn't run around 100 mph once I let her off the chain(we use chains and not leashes 'cause she ripped and teared two pairs already.)?

Thanks for the good suggestions, but I have to make it clear to you people that I didn't have much time to train her, like my other dogs(who turned out pretty calm and controlled without a chain). I had to go to school in the morning, homework in afternoon, and my parents are doctor and nurse. I know I should train puppies, but I don't have much free time. We're putting her on the chain for her safety. Two of our dogs already got killed by hit-and-run drivers because they loved to go on walks around the property and sometimes they like to explore areas several feet away from the property(which has no fence).

THINK.
If you were grounded everyday (same as your dog on chain) and could not hang out to do unsupervised things with your friends that you would normally like to do but your dad doesn't want you to get into any trouble... how would your dad be rated as a parent? Not using good parenting skills to achieve good behavior from you right?
You would be nutty too with this grounded confinement everyday. Your dad instead chooses to be a good parent and simplifies things by setting rules, boundaries and limitations for you as his daughter, as he should... results are good if you follow his training then everyone within the household is happy and content.
You as a dog owner have to set that same example for your dog. She has to be taught what is acceptable behavior and what is not. So this is where training and exercise come in. Just as your dad has set rules for you, you have to set rules as a dog owner.
Your trained dog doesn't need to live on a chain (grounded) but for her safety she must have some kind of confinement when she is left alone.Training your dog and giving her plenty of supervised exercise makes the dog and everyone in the household happy.
You will see a big change in your dog's behavior if you would just apply training and EXERCISE for her. Classes are easy to find just ask your vet's office.
A fence is always a good idea for safe confinement.

15 months is still a puppy. She will probably calm down a lot with age. Some dogs have a lot more energy than others, but if she is perfectly obedient, take her for advanced training. You're lucky to have such a smart dog so don't stop at the basics. Teach her more. My daughter has Aussies that have a lot of energy. Some breeds like this need a "job" to keep them busy. Lots of chew bones and toys and busy stuff like jumping through hoops or something where you don't have to run for miles. And remember with age, she will settle down a lot. Have fun with her, she is still a puppy.....

What would make a person ask a question like that?
You're stupid for not understanding that you NEED to take time to train a dog, and an idiot for not including any real info on the dog's age or anything important?
If you can't take the time to do what need be done, don't take on a responsibility.
and PS, on a personal note, don't waste your time answering questions that you didn't TAKE the time to read. E-mail me if you'd like to deffend yourself, but it'd be pretty damned hard ^_^

First of all, how old is the dog? Pups are always going to be Hyper. If you let her have one litter of pups she will calm down then get her spaded immediately.
Do you walk him/her or do you just stick her out there. dogs are like children and they need stimulation, playing, fetching, running, etc.
Have you ever watched the Dog Whisperer, Ceaser Mulan? He has helped with issues I have had with my dog.
Good luck to you! :)

Walk her a couple times a day , a good jog a couple times a week, maybe like doggy day care where she can run and play with other dogs . I've read where people have used tennis courts enclosed with a fence to let their dogs run in .I've never done it.Also if you have a off leash dog park close by ,then your dog could run.Your dog needs exersice ,this is why the dog is hyper.

I don't think there is a way to make them more calm.I have a one year old pit bull and she has always been hyper and even after all the training she has had she is still hyper.I think they calm down with age because she has calmed down a little but not much.If not go to google and they have web sites that can help.

You need to get the fence up and let it run. It needs to get rid of some of it's energy. In the mean time go for a lot of walks on the leash.

take doggie off the chain! i have a whippet and that is a very active breed. we live in the city so i have to go to the dog park to take kelso off his leash. until you get the big fence, put the smaller one up around the dog house. but until that find a local dog park.
