Ugh... No no no no! those are ALL wrong.

The biggest secret to Mona Lisa's smile, is that at that particular time period, there was no expression in the faces of the subjects of the paintings.
All the portraits were the same stone faces.
By painting that little smirk, Da Vinci defied every convention his peers had out there.

You can speculate all you want about her life, but the only person that will ever really know is Leonardo DaVinci.

That is the biggest reason its a secret, why is she smiling when the rest of them dont?

The answer is most likely because DaVinci was a Prankster. He played pranks on the catholic church, his patrons, the wealthy. In reality, it was probably just a joke that only davinci gets.

Ps. The davinci code is NOT an accurate book by any means.

Seriously, this is what some art scholars think.

Mona Lisa's smile has nothing to do with the way Da Vinci drew her mouth nor her face... The Background did it all... It was like an illusion that Mona Lisa's sort of 'abstract' background was an illusion. If you look at it closely, you will see that the left portion seems not to match the right part. If the background was drawn, the left should be aligned with the right. But one portion seems to be higher, therefore creating an illusion of the 'mysterious smile'.

Still, some theories suggest that Mona Lisa is Da Vinci being a woman while others think that Mona Lisa is neither a man nor woman... :)

To begin with, the Mona Lisa was the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo (and this is where it got its other name: La Gioconda). It was said that the family of del Giocondo was moving to a new house, and thought of having a portrait of Senora del Giocondo. The catch is, no aristocratic woman used to wear the same clothes those drawn in the Mona Lisa, more precisely the black dress and the gold sleeves. However, signs of aristocratic status is clearly shown in the veil on the head of Senora del Giocondo in the painting. Many say that it could have been that the del Giocondos were having a funeral, which explains why Lisa was dressed in black, and they also say that Leonardo da Vinci tried to humor Lisa because she was sad from the lost of a loved one, and this explains her semi-smile that amazed artists for centuries which is also a very good example of a "grace under pressure".

In the painting, Leonardo da Vinci is displaying his mastery of chiarscuro, a subtle shading technique of the High Renaissance. As for his model, who knows? There are many theories with nothing reallly to support them.

i don't think there is one. that's how she smiled. period. probably it's true that she had bad teeth and never smiled with her mouth open. i really never cared or thought it was that mysterious. and yes, i have even seen it in person and still didn't think there was any big secret. yeah sure, she was human, she probably had things on her mind, maybe even 'naughty' things. and she was painted by a famous artist. that's all i can see about it.
