Safely, effectively? With a vet. Fleas cause heartworm.

If he is a small puppy just give him a bath in dish soap. It stunns the fleas and you can pick them off. Just keep repeating until you get all of them. Dont use any over the counter flea products- they dont work well and can cause neurological problems in young or underwieght animals. If he is over 2 pounds you can get a flea product from the vet- a topical product that lasts for a month- or a tablet that will kill all the fleas he has on him over the next 24 hours. He also has to be at least 6 weeks of age. Also make sure that he has food readily available- sounds like he has had it kinda rough. He will need some energy to deal with the extra stress. Make sure you get him checked out by the vet asap in case he needs any meds for anemia or antibiotics. Thanks for being so compassionate and helping him out. We need more people like you out there.

Get a good brand of Flea & Tick shampoo for puppies, since you don't know the exact age, but you say it's still a pup. After bathing pup that should kill the live fleas. Then you should really take the pup to a vet and have his health and weight checked. They can tell you the age if you plan on keeping the puppy. If the pup has fleas then it most likely has worms too. It's going to be expensive your first trip to the vets between the examination , shots , and I recommend Frontline plus for dogs, it works really well killing eggs ticks and fleas, plus heart worm pills and they will want to do blood test on pup for that. If all this is to overwhelming for you and you won't be able to take care of the dog, please take it to your nearest ASPCA or Rescue shelter.

There should be flea shampoo just for puppies at the pet store, maybe do some research online for which is the safest brand. However, maybe taking the puppy to vet is best if infestation is pretty bad...also puppies need health check up esp if it's been abused. Have you heard of Companion Pet Clinic in your area? They are a little cheaper than other vets. Look up and call different vets for prices.

flea shampoo

wash bedding

flea coller

flea meds like; once monthly K-9 Advantix

I would take him to a Vet to estimate his age before doing too much with meds.

1. wash him with dog shampoo
2. dilute tea tree oil in a bucket of water and pour it over him
(tea tree won't harm your pet..just keep out of his eyes)
3. wait til he is dry
4. apply exelpet or equivalent flea treatment
5. wash any bedding or materials he has been on
6. dilute tea tree and put into a spray bottle and spray his bedding with it

do you realise you will have to worm him aswell? you can get worming tablets from coles or any supermarket.

hope that helps....you are very kind hearted to take in an abused pet!!!

good luck
