Why do people say "your fever broke" or "your fever's gonna break". Broke...break...is it medical, technical??

A little known fact that many don't know... You can break a fever with ice and cold water cloths. I know, I did it when I was sick on the road...

it is just a lay people expression..
not a technical term at all..
but it means that fever is out of control..

Its a colloquial saying to indicate that a person with a much higher than average body temperature, is return to normal.
