I'm sure some think of them as literal, while other more liberal Hindus think of them as metaphoric, just like in any other religion.

As per Hinduism God is Unique, in the initial stages of worship, we worship God who is Unique ( ParaBrahmn ) in different forms and dieties. We donot treat animal,plants.......... as God but we do respect them. No metaphoric things.
